Comprehensive Eye Exam

What is a Comprehensive Eye Exam?

A comprehensive eye exam is a thorough evaluation of your vision and eye health conducted by a licensed optometrist or ophthalmologist. It involves a series of tests to assess not only how well you see but also the overall health of your eyes. Regular eye exams are crucial for maintaining optimal vision and detecting potential eye conditions early.

Why are Comprehensive Eye Exams Important?

Early Detection of Eye Diseases: Many eye conditions, such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy, develop without noticeable symptoms. Regular exams can detect these conditions early, allowing for timely treatment.

Corrective Measures: If you have vision problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism, a comprehensive eye exam can determine the precise prescription needed for eyeglasses or contact lenses.

Overall Health Insight: Your eyes can reveal signs of systemic health issues like diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. An eye exam can sometimes detect these conditions before other symptoms appear.

Children’s Vision Development: Regular eye exams are essential for children to ensure their vision is developing correctly. Undetected vision problems can affect learning and development. Early detection is key in a developing child.

What to Expect During a Comprehensive Eye Exam

Medical History Review
Your eye doctor will begin by reviewing your medical history, including any current medications, previous eye issues, and overall health conditions. We utilize digital intake forms to reduce the amount of paperwork (and waste) our patients must complete.

Visual Acuity Test
This test measures how clearly you see using an eye chart. You'll read letters or symbols from a distance to determine the sharpness of your vision.

Refraction Assessment
This test helps determine your exact eyeglass prescription by having you look through a series of lenses to find which ones provide the clearest vision. Our refraction systems are digital, allowing our provider to prescribe the most accurate and precise presciptions possible. For our pediatric patients, we have child- friendly measurement devices that allow our providers to accurately assess your child's vision without their responses.

Eye Movement and Coordination Tests
These tests check how well your eyes work together and their ability to track moving objects. It helps identify issues like strabismus (misalignment) and amblyopia (lazy eye). Our exams also offer Neurolens technology which detects and measures microscopic eye misalignment that can lead to headaches, eye strain and discomfort, allowing our doctors to prescribe spectacle lenses to provide you with the most clear and comfortable vision.

Peripheral Vision Test
Also known as a visual field test, this evaluates your side vision to detect conditions like glaucoma. Eyediology utilizes the newest technology, utilizing VR headsets to accurately measure your peripheral vision.

Eye Pressure Test
This measures the pressure inside your eyes to screen for glaucoma. Eyediology Vision Care offers iCare tonometry, known as the most comfortable way to measure intraocular pressure, with no puff of air.

Slit-Lamp Examination
A slit lamp is a microscope that allows your eye doctor to examine the structures of your eye in detail, including the cornea, lens, and retina.

Retinal Examination
Using special instruments, your eye doctor will examine the back of your eye (retina) to check for signs of retinal diseases, optic nerve issues, and other health problems. Our office offers Optomap Retinal imaging, which allows a wide- field view and documentation of the retina, allowing your doctor to track for change over time as well as evaluate the health of your eyes with the most up to date technology.
